Amazon is making a new TV show set in Middle-earth, the world J.R.R. Tolkien explored in books like The Hobbit, The Lord of the Rings and The Silmarillion. But the show won’t necessary cover the events from those books. While The Silmarillion is primarily concerned with the First Age of Middle-earth and both The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings are set during the Third, The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power will take place during the Second Age.
That means this new show will take place thousands of years before characters like Bilbo and Frodo were born. It’s a bold move on Amazon’s part (so is spending the huge amount of money they’re investing in this series). We’ll be able to see the results soon: The Rings of Power premieres on Friday, September 2, 2022.
We don’t know if Amazon is going to drop multiple episodes on that date, but if they follow the pattern they’ve established, I wouldn’t be surprised if we get the first three episodes all at once and the remaining ones will come out once per week.
